Historical context

Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later styled Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. In early 215 AD, Caracalla introduced a new currency known as the antoninianus, a double denarius featuring the emperor wearing a radiate crown. Minted at Rome, this coin exemplifies the newly established denomination, which was initially issued in silver.
