Historical context
Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus and later named Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. He initially served as co-emperor alongside his father, Septimius Severus, and briefly shared power with his brother Geta after 211 AD. Following Geta's murder, Caracalla became sole ruler of the Roman Empire, overseeing a reign marked by domestic instability and external incursions by Germanic peoples.
Produced at the Rome mint, this silver piece is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC. During his sole rule, Caracalla also introduced a new currency known as the antoninianus, a double denarius. The obverse bears Caracalla's likeness with the legend "ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM", while the reverse depicts the god Jupiter holding a thunderbolt and sceptre, accompanied by the imperial titulature legend "P M TR P XVIIII COS IIII P P".
