Historical context

Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus, reigned as Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, ruling alone after the death of his father Septimius Severus and the murder of his brother Geta in 211 AD. In early 215 AD, he introduced a new denomination termed the antoninianus. Minted at Rome, this silver issue belongs to the new currency introduced during his reign, which initially possessed an intrinsic silver content equivalent to only 1.5 denarii.
