Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, initially serving as nominal co-emperor alongside his father, Septimius Severus. Severus had seized imperial power in 193 following the death of Pertinax and founded the Severan dynasty with his wife Julia Domna. In 198, Severus elevated his elder son Caracalla to the rank of co-ruler, establishing joint imperial authority across the Roman Empire.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver coin denomination in use from circa 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse presents Caracalla with the legend "ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS", referencing the imperial name Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. The reverse features Securitas seated near an altar holding a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "PONT TR P II".
