Historical context

This denarius was struck at Laodicea ad Mare, a coastal city in Syria historically founded under the Seleucid Empire. The issue was authorised under Septimius Severus and his elder son Caracalla, whom Severus proclaimed co-ruler in 198. Severus ruled the Roman Empire from 193 to 211, having emerged victorious from civil conflicts against Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, while Caracalla would ultimately rule until 217.
