RIC IV Caracalla 385 (denarius). Denomination: Denarius. Authority: Caracalla. Mint: Rome. The obverse shows bust of Julia Domna, hair elaborately waved in ridges and turned up low at the back, draped, right, with the legend IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG.

The reverse shows pudicitia, veiled, draped, seated left, facing front, resting right hand on breast and holding sceptre in left hand, with the legend PVDICITIA.

Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, ruling as a member of the Severan dynasty. Initially proclaimed co-ruler under his father Septimius Severus, he briefly shared power with his brother Geta following their father's death in 211 AD. After ordering Geta's murder, Caracalla became sole ruler. His mother, Empress Julia Domna, took a significant share in governance, as Caracalla found administrative duties mundane.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse portrays Julia Domna with the legend "IVLIA PIA FELIX AVG". The reverse depicts Pudicitia seated, veiled, and holding a sceptre, accompanied by the legend "PVDICITIA".
