Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, serving initially as co-emperor under his father, Septimius Severus, who founded the Severan dynasty. Severus had proclaimed Caracalla co-ruler in 198 following the consolidation of his authority over the Roman Empire. During this joint rule, coinage was issued from the imperial mint at Rome under the authority of both emperors.

Struck in silver, this denarius belonged to the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC. The coin identifies the young co-emperor on the obverse as "ANTONINVS AVGVSTVS", while the reverse legend "SEVERI PII AVG FIL" defines his position as the son of Septimius Severus. The reverse imagery portrays Caracalla in military attire holding a reversed spear and Victory on a globe, accompanied by a seated captive at his feet.
