Historical context

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, ruling as a member of the Severan dynasty initially alongside his father Septimius Severus and later as sole emperor after orchestrating the murder of his brother Geta in 211 AD. His reign was characterised by domestic instability, military engagements against Germanic peoples, and an eastern campaign initiated against the Parthian Empire in 216. Struck at Rome, this coin is a sestertius, a denomination that circulated during the Roman Empire as a large brass piece worth one quarter of a denarius.
