Historical context
Caracalla was proclaimed co-ruler by his father, Emperor Septimius Severus, in 198, sharing imperial authority until Severus died in 211. The Severan dynasty saw Caracalla later assume sole rule following the death of his brother Geta, eventually instituting citizenship reforms and currency changes before his death in 217.
