Denarius in silver struck at Rome under Didius Julianus, AD 193, catalogued as RIC IV Didius Julianus 10 (denarius). Obverse: Bust of Didia Clara, hair elaborately waved and coiled on back of head, draped, right.

Reverse: Hilaritas, draped, standing left, holding a long palm in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand. Obverse legend: DIDIA CLARA AVG. Reverse legend: HILAR TEMPOR.

Historical context

Didia Clara was the daughter and only recorded child of the Roman emperor Didius Julianus and empress Manlia Scantilla. After Julianus was accorded the title of Augustus by the Senate, Clara and her mother were both granted the title of Augusta. This denarius reflects that elevated status, struck at Rome during her father's brief rule in 193 before he was killed by a soldier in June of that year.
