Historical context

Marcus Didius Julianus ruled as Roman emperor from March to June 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. Julianus's brief reign ended when Septimius Severus marched on Rome, leading to Julianus being abandoned by the Senate and the Praetorian Guard and killed in the palace.

Struck at Rome, this bronze sestertius belongs to the imperial coinage of Julianus's short rule. The coin identifies the emperor on the obverse with the legend IMP CAES M DID SEVER IVLIAN AVG, while the reverse depicts Fortuna holding a rudder on a globe and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend P M TR P COS S C.
