Historical context

Didius Julianus served as Roman emperor from March to June 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. His brief rule ended when Septimius Severus marched on Rome, prompting the Senate and Praetorian Guard to abandon Julianus, who was then killed in the palace.

Struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Didius Julianus, this bronze sestertius features his empress, Manlia Scantilla. The sestertius served as an ancient Roman denomination valued at one quarter of a denarius, functioning as a large coin useful for general commerce. The obverse presents Manlia Scantilla accompanied by the legend "MANLIA SCANTILLA AVG", while the reverse depicts the goddess Juno holding a patera and sceptre, accompanied by a peacock and the legend "IVNO REGINA S C".
