Historical context

Didius Julianus served as Roman emperor from March to June 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. His brief rule ended when Septimius Severus advanced on Rome, leading to Julianus being abandoned by the Senate and the Praetorian Guard before being killed in the palace.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius was issued under the authority of Didius Julianus. In the Roman monetary system, the sestertius represented a value of two and a half asses and was useful for commerce as a quarter of a denarius. The obverse depicts the draped bust of Didia Clara accompanied by the inscription "DIDIA CLARA AVG", while the reverse portrays Hilaritas holding a long palm and cornucopiae, encircled by the legend "HILAR TEMPOR S C".
