Historical context

Didius Julianus served as Roman emperor from March to June 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. His brief rule was marked by civil war against three rival generals and ended when Septimius Severus marched on Rome, leading to Julianus being killed in the palace.

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold aureus represents the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire, which had been standardized during the imperial era. The obverse features Julianus's empress, Manlia Scantilla, accompanied by the inscription "MANLIA SCANTILLA AVG". The reverse depicts the goddess Juno, veiled and holding a patera and sceptre beside a peacock, alongside the legend "IVNO REGINA".
