Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, known as Elagabalus, ruled as Roman emperor from 218 to 222. Originally from a prominent Syrian Arab family based in Emesa, where he served as head priest of the sun god Elagabal, he was raised to the imperial throne at the age of 14 after the overthrow of Macrinus. This denarius was minted in Antioch, the capital of Roman Syria and one of the largest cities of the empire, which had been founded in 300 BC by Seleucus I Nicator.
