Historical context

Elagabalus, born Varius Avitus Bassianus and closely related to the Severan dynasty, ruled as Roman emperor from 218 until his assassination in March 222. Originally serving as the head priest of the sun god Elagabal in Emesa, he was raised to the Principate at the age of 14 following an army revolt. He moved to Rome, bringing the cult of Elagabal to the imperial capital.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Elagabalus, this silver coin represents the denarius, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The issue features Julia Paula on the obverse alongside the legend "IVLIA PAVLA AVG". The reverse depicts the seated figure of Concordia holding a patera, accompanied by a star in the field and the legend "CONCORDIA".
