Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, known as Elagabalus, ruled the Roman Empire from 218 to 222 after being raised to the Principate at fourteen years of age following an army revolt against Macrinus. A relative of the Severan dynasty from Emesa, Syria, his reign was based in Rome, where this silver coin was struck. Historical accounts record that Elagabalus married four women during his imperial rule.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver piece is a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse presents a draped bust of Julia Paula with the legend "IVLIA PAVLA AVG". The reverse depicts Concordia seated, draped, holding a patera in her extended right hand and a double cornucopiae in her left hand, accompanied by the inscription "CONCORDIA AVGG".
