Historical context

Elagabalus, born Varius Avitus Bassianus and closely related to the Severan dynasty, ruled the Roman Empire from 218 until his assassination in March 222. Raised to the Principate as a teenager following an army revolt against Macrinus, his brief reign in Rome became noted for religious controversy. Contemporary sources record that he married four women, including a Vestal Virgin.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC during the Second Punic War. The coin was struck under the authority of Elagabalus in the name of Aquilia Severa, bearing her portrait and the obverse legend "IVLIA AQVILIA SEVERA AVG". The reverse design depicts Concordia sacrificing over an altar and holding a double cornucopiae, accompanied by a star and the legend "CONCORDIA".
