Historical context

Elagabalus was Roman emperor from 218 to 222, having been raised to power at age 14 through an army revolt instigated by his grandmother Julia Maesa following the death of Caracalla. His mother, the Syrian noblewoman Julia Soaemias, acted as one of his chief advisers during his contentious reign until both were killed by the Praetorian Guard in 222.
