Historical context
Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire, a denomination introduced around 211 BC and utilised until the reign of Gordian III. The coin features the emperor's mother, Julia Soaemias, designated on the obverse as "IVLIA SOAEMIAS AVG". The reverse is dedicated to the divine realm with the inscription "VENVS CAELESTIS", depicting a seated Venus accompanied by a child.
