Historical context

Julia Maesa was a prominent member of the Severan dynasty and the sister of Empress Julia Domna. Following the assassination of Caracalla and the usurpation of Macrinus, Maesa restored her family to the throne by instigating a military revolt that elevated her 14-year-old grandson Elagabalus to emperor in 218. As Augusta of the Empire, she exercised vast political influence throughout his reign until her death around 224. This silver denarius was struck at the Rome mint under the imperial authority of Elagabalus, displaying Maesa's elevated status.
