Historical context

Struck at Rome, this bronze sestertius features Annia Faustina, one of four women married to Elagabalus during his reign according to historical accounts. During the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a large brass denomination useful for commerce, nominally valued at one quarter of a denarius or two and a half asses. The obverse presents the legend "ANNIA FAVSTINA AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "CONCORDIA S C" and depicts Elagabalus and Annia Faustina facing one another and clasping right hands beneath a star.
