RIC IV Geta 104. Denomination: Denarius. Authority: Geta; Septimius Severus. Mint: Laodicea ad Mare. The obverse shows bust of Geta, bare-headed, draped, right, with the legend P SEPTIMIVS GETA CAES.

The reverse shows minerva, helmeted, draped, advancing left, holding Victory in extended right hand and spear in left hand; at feet, left, shield; to right, trophy, with the legend MINER VICTRIX.

Historical context

This silver coin was issued under the authority of Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and his younger son Geta from the mint at Laodicea ad Mare. Septimius Severus reigned from 193 to 211, establishing the Severan dynasty following the civil conflicts of the Year of the Five Emperors and subsequent campaigns in both the eastern and western provinces. Geta, his son with Julia Domna, was later elevated to Augustus in 209.

Struck as a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin of the period, the piece carries the obverse legend "P SEPTIMIVS GETA CAES" accompanying the bare-headed, draped portrait of Geta. The reverse legend "MINER VICTRIX" frames an image of a helmeted Minerva advancing left with a trophy, shield, spear, and Victory.
