Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 until his death in 211, founding the Severan dynasty. With his wife Julia Domna, he had two sons, Caracalla and Geta. Caracalla was proclaimed Augustus in 198, and Geta was raised to Augustus in 209. Severus campaigned in Britain from 208 until he died at Eboracum in early 211, leaving his sons to succeed him.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Geta and Septimius Severus, this bronze coin is a sestertius, a denomination that served as a large brass coin during the Roman Empire with a value useful for commerce. The obverse depicts Geta alongside the legend "IMP CAES P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "PONTIF TR P II COS II S C" and portrays Caracalla and Geta in military attire as a triumph group, accompanied by soldiers holding a vexillum and standards beside a bound captive.
