Historical context

This bronze coin was issued under the authority of Geta within the Roman Empire, produced at the mint of Rome.

The denomination is a sestertius, which was an ancient Roman coin useful for commerce. While it originated during the Roman Republic as a small silver coin, it served during the Roman Empire as a large coin valued at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius. The obverse carries the legend "P SEPTIMIVS GETA PIVS AVG BRIT", while the reverse bears the inscription "TR P III COS II P P S C". The reverse design depicts a woman seated left, holding a sceptre and a cornucopiae, accompanied by a seated figure on the ground to the left and a reclining river-god to the right.
