Historical context

This silver coin was produced at the mint of Rome under the authority of Septimius Severus and his younger son, Geta. Severus, who became Roman emperor in 193 after the death of Pertinax, established the Severan dynasty with his wife Julia Domna and their sons. While the elder son, Caracalla, became Augustus in 198, Geta was later proclaimed Augustus in 209 before Severus died at Eboracum in 211.

Struck as a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin of the period, the piece features an obverse identifying Geta with the legend "P SEPT GETA CAES PONT". The reverse shows Geta standing in military attire with a branch, a spear, and a trophy behind him, accompanied by the inscription "PRINC IVVENTVTIS".
