Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, establishing the Severan dynasty with his wife Julia Domna and their two sons. The younger son, Geta, was proclaimed Augustus in 209 alongside his elder brother Caracalla. Coinage issued under the joint imperial authority of Septimius Severus and Geta was struck at the mint of Rome.

This silver denarius formed part of the standard silver currency of the Roman Empire, which had circulated since c. 211 BC. The coin features the obverse legend "GETA CAES PONT COS" around the bare-headed, draped bust of Geta. The reverse bears the inscription "FELICITAS AVGG" and depicts Felicitas standing draped, carrying a caduceus in her right hand and a cornucopiae in her left.
