Historical context

During the Roman Empire, Septimius Severus seized power in 193 following the death of Pertinax. He ruled until 211, establishing the Severan dynasty with his wife Julia Domna and their two sons, Caracalla and Geta. Coins were produced at the Rome mint under the authority of Septimius Severus and Geta.

This silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage in use from c. 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The reverse bears the inscription "SEVERI PII AVG FIL", indicating his position as the son of Septimius Severus, alongside priestly implements comprising a lituus, knife, jug, simpulum, and sprinkler.
