Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, establishing imperial authority following the Year of the Five Emperors. Having seized power after the death of Pertinax, Severus secured his position by defeating rival claimants. He had two sons with his second wife, Julia Domna, including Geta, who was later proclaimed co-emperor in 209 alongside his elder brother Caracalla.

Struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Septimius Severus and Geta, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire. The reverse features Spes advancing left, holding a flower and lifting a fold of her skirt, paired with the legend "SPES PVBLICA".
