Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled the Roman Empire from 193 until his death in 211 at Eboracum. Having seized power during the Year of the Five Emperors, he established the Severan dynasty with his wife Julia Domna and their two sons.

Struck at Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire, which had circulated since its introduction around 211 BC. The reverse, inscribed with the priestly and magisterial titles "PONTIF COS II", depicts a naked genius sacrificing from a patera over a lighted, garlanded altar while holding corn-ears.
