Historical context

This silver denarius was struck at Rome under the authority of Septimius Severus and his younger son Geta. Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, following the death of Pertinax during the Year of the Five Emperors. With his wife Julia Domna, Severus established the Severan dynasty, raising his elder son Caracalla to Augustus in 198 and Geta to Augustus in 209.

The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC during the Second Punic War until its gradual replacement during the reign of Gordian III. The obverse features the bust of Geta accompanied by the legend "P SEPT GETA CAES PONT". The reverse depicts the figure of Castor standing before a horse, holding its reins alongside a spear or sceptre, beneath the legend "CASTOR".
