Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, establishing the Severan dynasty alongside his family. His younger son, Geta, was elevated to the rank of Augustus, or co-emperor, in 209 alongside his elder brother Caracalla. Following Severus's death at Eboracum in early 211, his sons succeeded him under the advice of their mother, Julia Domna.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Geta and Septimius Severus. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse features the laureate, bearded head of Geta with the legend "IMP CAES P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG", whilst the reverse bears the legend "PONTIF TR P COS II" and portrays a naked genius sacrificing from a patera over a garlanded and lighted altar while holding corn-ears.
