RIC IV Geta 87. Denomination: Aureus. Authority: Geta; Septimius Severus. Mint: Rome. The obverse shows head of Geta, laureate, bearded, right, with the legend P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG BRIT.

The reverse shows caracalla and Geta seated left on platform on right; in front, Liberalitas, draped, standing right, holding abacus in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand; on steps of platform, citizen, standing right, with the legend LIB AVGG V ET VI.

Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled the Roman Empire from 193 to 211, establishing the Severan dynasty with his sons Caracalla and Geta. Caracalla had been proclaimed Augustus in 198, and Geta was elevated to Augustus in 209. Following Severus's death at Eboracum in early 211 after military operations in Britain and Caledonia, his sons succeeded him as rulers of the Roman Empire.

The obverse depicts Geta with the legend "P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG BRIT", while the reverse bears the inscription "LIB AVGG V ET VI" and shows Caracalla and Geta seated on a platform alongside a standing citizen and Liberalitas, who holds an abacus and a cornucopiae.
