Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, following the Year of the Five Emperors. With his second wife, Julia Domna, Severus had two sons, Caracalla and Geta. Geta was proclaimed Augustus, or co-emperor, in 209. Severus travelled to Britain in 208 and invaded Caledonia in 209 before dying at Eboracum in early 211, leaving his sons to succeed him.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Geta and Septimius Severus, this piece is a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin introduced during the Second Punic War. The obverse bears the imperial title of Geta with the legend "P SEPT GETA PIVS AVG BRIT", referencing Britain where the imperial family campaigned. The reverse depicts Liberalitas holding an abacus and cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "LIBERALITAS AVG V".
