Historical context

Gordian I briefly served as Roman emperor alongside his son Gordian II in AD 238 during the Year of the Six Emperors. Having joined a rebellion against Emperor Maximinus Thrax, he ruled for only 22 days before suffering defeat in battle and taking his own life following the death of his son. Struck at Rome in AD 238, this bronze sestertius belongs to this exceptionally short imperial reign.
