Historical context
Gordian II was briefly Roman emperor in AD 238, ruling alongside his father Gordian I during the Year of the Six Emperors in an effort to overthrow Maximinus Thrax. He died in battle outside Carthage, leaving him with the shortest recorded reign of any Roman emperor at approximately 22 days. This denarius was struck in Rome during that brief joint rule in AD 238, near the close of the denarius's long run as the standard Roman silver coin before being replaced under Gordian III.
