Historical context
Gordian II was Roman emperor briefly in AD 238 alongside his father, Gordian I, during the Year of the Six Emperors. Seeking to overthrow Maximinus Thrax, he was killed in battle outside Carthage, leaving him with the shortest recorded reign of any Roman emperor at approximately 22 days. This silver denarius was struck under his brief authority at the mint of Rome in AD 238, during the standard Roman silver coin's final years before its replacement under Gordian III.
