Historical context

Gordian III served as Roman emperor between 238 and 244, having acceded to the imperial throne at the age of 13. His reign fell within the imperial era of the Roman Empire, with coinage for his administration being struck at the mint of Rome.

This silver denarius was struck during a period when the denomination, which had served as the standard Roman silver coin since circa 211 BC, was being gradually replaced by the antoninianus. The piece bears the obverse legend "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG" alongside a portrait of the emperor. The reverse depicts Gordian III in military attire, holding a transverse spear and a globe, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P III COS II P P".
