Historical context

Gordian III served as Roman emperor between 238 and 244, having acceded to sole rule over the united Roman Empire at the age of thirteen. He was the grandson of Gordian I and nephew of Gordian II. During his imperial reign, official coinage bearing his imperial titles was produced at the mint of Rome.

This silver denarius belongs to the final period in which the denomination served as the standard Roman silver coin. First introduced circa 211 BC during the Second Punic War, the denarius was gradually replaced by the antoninianus under Gordian III. The coin pairs an obverse legend styling the emperor as "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG" with a reverse design depicting Pietas and the legend "PIETAS AVGVSTI".
