Historical context

Gordian III served as Roman emperor between 238 and 244, having acceded as the second-youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire at the age of 13. He was the son of Maecia Faustina—the daughter of Gordian I and sister of Gordian II—and Junius Balbus. His imperial coinage was produced at official facilities, including the mint at Rome.

This silver coin represents a denarius, a denomination that had functioned as the standard Roman silver coin since its introduction during the Second Punic War around 211 BC. During the reign of Gordian III, the denarius was gradually replaced by the antoninianus. This issue carries the obverse legend "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG" alongside a reverse depicting Securitas seated with a sceptre, inscribed "SECVRITAS PVBLICA".
