Historical context

Gordian III reigned as Roman emperor between 238 and 244, having attained power as sole ruler of the united Roman Empire at the age of thirteen. His imperial coinage was produced at Rome during this period of rule.

This silver antoninianus belongs to a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The coin features the obverse inscription "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG" and displays the emperor wearing a radiate crown, which distinguished the denomination as a double unit. Its reverse pairs the legend "FORT REDVX" with a depiction of Fortuna seated, holding a rudder set on the ground and a cornucopiae, with a wheel positioned beneath her seat.
