Historical context

This coin was issued by Gordian III, who reigned as Roman emperor from 238 to 244. Becoming emperor at the age of 13 following his acclamation, he was the second-youngest sole ruler of the united Roman Empire. The son of Maecia Faustina and grandson of Emperor Gordian I, he governed during a period marked by the monetary output of the imperial mint at Rome.

Struck in silver at the Rome mint, this piece is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse served as the visual indicator of this double denomination. The obverse bears the imperial titulature "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG", while the reverse displays Securitas accompanied by the legend "SECVRIT PERP".
