Historical context

Gordian III served as Roman emperor from 238 until around February 244. Becoming the second-youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire at the age of 13, he was the grandson of Emperor Gordian I and the nephew of Emperor Gordian II. During his reign, the imperial authorities produced coin issues from the mint of Rome.

This silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD, thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse indicated this double denomination. The reverse carries the legend "VICTOR AETER" alongside a depiction of a winged Victory leaning on a shield, holding a palm, and positioned above a seated captive.
