Historical context

Gordian III served as Roman emperor from 238 until circa February 244. Born Marcus Antonius Gordianus in 225, he was the grandson of Gordian I and nephew of Gordian II. Upon his acclamation at the age of thirteen, he became the second-youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the Rome mint under Gordian III's authority. The denomination was introduced by Caracalla in 215 as a double denomination thought to be valued at two denarii, distinguished on imperial portraiture by a radiate crown. The obverse presents the emperor with the title "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "VICTORIA AETER" alongside an image of winged Victory standing with a shield and palm branch beside a seated captive.
