Historical context

The antoninianus was a denomination introduced under Caracalla in early 215 AD and is thought to have been valued at two denarii. Characterised by the radiate crown worn by the emperor to signify a double denomination, the silver coin originally contained the bullion equivalent of only 1.5 denarii. Struck during an era when emperors required coin to pay soldiers and maintain loyalty, this issue presents Gordian III alongside the obverse legend "IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG". The reverse depicts Pax accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P II COS P P".
