Historical context

This silver antoninianus belongs to a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215, which was thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on such coins served to indicate its status as a double denomination. The obverse bears the inscription "IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG", while the reverse presents the legend "P M TR P II COS P P" alongside an image of the veiled, togate emperor sacrificing over an altar with a patera.
