Historical context

Gordian III reigned as Roman emperor from 238 to 244, having acceded to sole imperial power at the age of thirteen. His imperial administration struck coin issues across the empire, including at the mint of Rome.

This silver antoninianus belongs to a denomination first introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The radiate crown worn by the emperor on the obverse served as the mark of this double denomination. The reverse presents Gordian III in military attire holding a globe and a transverse spear, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P IIII COS II P P", while the obverse carries the imperial titulature "IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG".
