Historical context
Maximinus Thrax was Roman emperor from 235 to 238. A commander of Thracian origin who rose through the military ranks, he was proclaimed emperor by the army following the murder of Severus Alexander in 235. His elevation marked the start of the Crisis of the Third Century, and he was the first Roman emperor who came neither from the senatorial nor equestrian class.
This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under Maximinus's authority. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III, when it was gradually superseded. The obverse bears the portrait of the emperor with the inscription "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG", whilst the reverse features the legend "P M TR P P P" alongside Maximinus in military dress standing between two standards, raising his right hand and leaning on a spear.
