Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 until 238, a reign commonly regarded as the start of the Crisis of the Third Century. After Severus Alexander was murdered by troops in 235, Maximinus was proclaimed emperor by the army. He ruled until 238, when a senatorial revolt arose and he was assassinated near Aquileia while marching on Rome.

This silver coin represents the denarius, which functioned as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. Struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Maximinus, the issue displays the emperor's portrait alongside the obverse legend "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG". The reverse depicts Pax holding a branch and sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "PAX AVGVSTI".
