Historical context
Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, having risen through the military ranks to hold high command on the Rhine. Following the murder of Severus Alexander in 235, the army proclaimed him emperor, marking the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century.
This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from around 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III, when the antoninianus gradually replaced it. On this issue, the obverse bears the emperor's portrait alongside the legend "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG", while the reverse displays the legend "SALVS AVGVSTI" and depicts Salus seated and feeding a snake coiled around an altar.
